The bottom part of a fraction
is two quantities written one above the other, that shows how much of a a whole thing we have.
The word is from 'nom' which from the Latin word for 'name'. If something is divided in to say, quarters,
the 'name' of the fraction is 4.
The top part of the fraction - the numerator - is from the Latin word for 'number'. It shows the number of quarters we have.
A way to remember
Thinking about the two parts of a fraction - the numerator and denominator - it is sometimes hard to remember which is which.
The word 'numerator' is based on the word 'number' - so the NUMerator shows the NUMber of pie slices. It goes on top.
